Sounds stupid i know but bear with me....

Just bought a smashed Astra. Front ender. But the sump is holed too.

Before i go to the hassle of swapping sumps, i want to make sure the engine is good because if its fucked its getting scrapped. Just want it to fire once and switch off.

Do Astras have some kind of sensor to prevent you starting with no/low oil?

Probably running when the oil was dropped in which case there's a likelihood of damage.

Although sump swap and run it would be preferable to scrapping a good one, only one way to find out for sure.

The sump damage doesnt fit with the rest though so i suspect its been holed at the salvage yard. Im quite confident the engine is good but just want to be sure.

Don't really see the issue.

Temporarily block the hole, so at least oil is in there. Car isn't moving, so even create some
Sort of deal with bit of sheet metal held in place tightly with a trolley jack

Doubtful you can seal it, if you're going to run with oil in then ideally it needs repairing. Fit one, run it, see what happens. Any other bodge with a hole in the engine is just going to leave you spending longer cleaning the garage that it would have taken to fit a sump.

I don't mean perma seal it, as car is stationary it should be easy enough to test. As long as is a case of soon as fires you turn it off.

Must be true if Davey says it

8' not talking about running it for 10 seconds and driving it.

I'm talking oil fully in, temporarily sealed and switched off second t fires.

Obviously IDEALLY you'd replace broken shit and do it, however if he doesn't want to spend money, those are the options

Yup. Have that exact same engine in my car, fitted by me.
I also said temporarily seal it. I missed that off original
Post assumed was obvious so included it later on.
