Main reason for the new building is due to the spread of employees. They rent a stupid number of buildings spread all over the city in addition to the existing Apple site. The theory is all the existing employees that are in other buildings will be able to work in one place. Along with new theatre etc for product releases etc which are currently done else where due to there being no Apple site big enough

Apple are probably a bit more old fashioned than Google or Facebook. Do Microsoft run a free canteen for their employees?
