Just wanted to ask if there are any down sides to doing a credit check (signing up to Experian etc) on yourself? Someone was talking guff to me in the pub the other night about how it can effect your rating and just wanted to check. Also, does anyone know any good sites that will do credit checks (Experian is one)?

i used experian's 30day trial to sort out a mistake on my credit history.

was easy to use. just remember to cancel on time, otherwise you'll get charged.

When you sign up to CreditExpert or Equifax, you don't do a credit check on yourself (you're not getting finance from yourself!) you are simply accessing your credit file.

You could access your credit file on a daily basis religiously all year round and it won't affect your credit rating whatsoever, yes there will be a 'footprint' of you accessing your credit file but it's NOT a credit search and only YOU and the credit reference agency can see that information, no-one else.

You'd need to have loads of credit checks to have any sort of effect anyway, a couple showing up don't make any difference.

I was told when applying for loans recently that they consider 2 credit applications a month as 'normal' and as a result wouldn't have an impact on your credit score/report. However multiple declined credit applications cannot be a good thing surely....

I've said it before but credit search's(footprints) do not confirm whether you were succesful/declined for that particular application. Multiple applications within a short space of time is not good as it usually indicates you have been declined.
