Ive used my WLAN to download the Nokia and Google respective SatNav solutions and they both use GPS 'backed up by a data connection'. Basically I want to use it as a SatNav but I have no mobile data package (and I dont want one).

I just want to know if GPS is free to use? Is it what standalone SatNav units use?

The GPS is free to use. Just don't download the maps via GPRS, 3G connection. The only thing you have to pay for on the GPS side is if you want the voice navigation as well.

2 types GPS and A-GPS.

1st is just the sat nav reciever and maps on your phone.

2nd is Assisted by the network triangulating your position to ensure a better faster signal as it uses 2methods simultaneosly.

IIRC the maps are pre-installed on the 8gb? Just the 1st gen sat nav phones had to download them?

As Jambos answer.

Only problem is that on my n95 8GB the internal GPS is SOOOO slow that I've gone and bought a standalone bluetooth GPS reciever which is way quicker and doesn't use so much battery.

I've used it with TomTom maps and its awesome

hmm, why do I need to use data transfer for voice nav? I did a test run earlier in simulation mode and it seemed to work ok?
