If so would hammerite be ok or would i need special paint?

Hammerite should be fine, just give it a good cleaning before you paint it.

I've wire brushed it, gunked it, powerwashed and then wiped it clean with white spirits. Will hammerite handle the heat and last a good while?

yeah hammerite will be fine, doesnt get that hot anyway

Did the inlet manifold today. can i hammerite the block? i bet this gets alot hotter than the inlet manifold.
