my engine and engine bay is as dirty as it can get, the last owner never cleaned it...
it would take hours, upon days, upon weeks to bring it up to scratch by hand
can i jet wash it with some form of degreaser ? or would a steam clean do a better job ?
im worried about all the electrics !

don't steam clean or jet wash, its not recommended (damage pipes etc)
just use some good degreaser like gunk or autoglym stuff, cover up all electrics with plastics bags, then hose off.
repeat if necessary, and maybe warm engine up a little bit before you do it to help shift the dirt
