I thought that, when i got the car it was open a bit and it used to make a "balloon going down" noise, so I shut it tight. Never knew what it was myself.

I disagree, my old 1.4 sport was better on fuel after fitting one and setting it up correctly.

it seems absolutley pointless to be there. Doesn't make it faster doesn't accelerate any differant. Doesn't change the fuel consmption at all.

Its meant to lean out the mixture by introducing air into the combustion blah blah blah

can ruin a car if used with MAF sensor...
not as bad on a car running MAP sensor, depending on where your servo pipe connects to the manifold.

same here, did make mine more efficient (remember these are very air thirsty engines, so breather mods close to the inlet manifold are helpful)
although the brake vacuum servo pipe only accounts for about 5% of your air intake.... but its close so can react quicker to vacuum build up in the engine (caused by nailing the throttle lol!.... made worse by mcdonald straw inlet plenums)
plus if they make a silly noise all the time, its not set up right and it will damage your engine as its letting in air when there isn't enough vacuum for it to need it to function, so it'll make it run too lean, which aint good for engines.
