i really have no experience with this, but i would like to converter a downloaded film which i think is <name>xvid.avi to play on a regular dvd player.
IVe downloaded a few programs which say they convert to dvd, but they seem only to output mpeg files and no vobs?
Anyone offer any advice or programs?

Nero 7 will do it, just drag and drop like burning anything else and 2 hours later its done. Easy as that
