What is the plastic thing which is attached to the rear axle and directs the handbrake cable towards the hub called? If this was knackered would it cause the handbrake not to work properly?

might just be easier if i remove it and take a pic, just thought it would be easier than taking wheel and hub off.

oh, the plastic slide that allows the cable to slide through it???

if it was knackered it will cause the cable to fray - eventually split
