the cams have got to come off so yes the belt will have to removed

undo the rocker cover, take the cam over off (as if you doing a cam belt)
undo the pulleys (e14) with a 22mm on the cams, undo the cam shafts, use a mangnet to lift the lifters up

retorque the cams down in the correct order, and torque the pulleys back up - u2u me if you want torque settings) and put the belt back on

Ok cheers.

Torque settings are in haynes

So does it need to be a pretty damn strong magnet to get the lifters out ?

lifters are not the heavy so your average magnet should do.

if they dont come out with ease then a drip of oil on top may loosen them to come out.

then follow the haynes and torque settings when putting back together.

a good smear of cam lube on the lobes when fitting new lifters is a good idea.

there very easy to get out, u can use either a magnet which doesnt have to be that strong or use one of those plungers which are used to lap valves in, they hold them good enough to get them out. one my x14xe it never used to tap untill i done an oil/filter change with castrol gtx highmileage (15/40) after that they tapped like mad constantly. when u change them i'd personaly use some semi synthetic 10/40...
