MOT time is coming up on monday and methinks the front discs and pads are going to need replacing. To save getting ripped off i called the local Linco and asked for prices.

1x Front pads = £14.93 VAT inc
1x Vented Disc = £15.27 VAT inc

So the total for parts for my fronts is £45.47. I assume that because it has vented discs already I might as well keep them vented and not go for solid (dont know whether I could go to solids anyway??) and what is the difference between solid and vented? Apart from the £10.10 price difference (solids cheaper).

Also, is £45.47 decent price or could i get them cheaper? I know fitment will be £30 - £40 and it isnt the sort of thing Im willing to undertake myself.

Cheers

The difference is vented discs are vented, they have a gap in the middle to let air in. This gives better performance as it keeps the discs cool.

Solid discs are solid metal, overheat quicker.

The price seems OK to me. As for fitting, don't be a girl and DIY.

Incase you decide to save some money, here you go.....

You will need a 10mm hex bit and breaker bar, 7mm allan key, pliers and screwdrivers.

Open bonnet, take cap off brake reservoir <---Important

Take off wheel and then undo 7mm allan bolts behind the caliper. These have dust caps on them BTW.

Pull off caliper and move out of the way. May be difficult.

Undo the 10mm allan bolts that hold on the bracket. Take this off.

Undo screw in disc, take disc off. Swap for new one. Screw back in.

Take retaining spring off caliper, and take out pads. Push brake piston back into the caliper. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE TOOK THE LID OFF THE BRAKE RESERVOIR. This may be a bit stiff, but it will move.

Put new pads in and replace the same way you took it off.

Put retaining spring back on. This is a bit fiddly and what the pliers are for.

It isn't that hard, just take your time and make sure you tighten everything up.

This man has a good point. Easy swap also. No modding or bashing with a hammer required.

Shouldn't think so. Give them a ring.

give them a ring, and tell them that you have fitted original manufacturer brakes from a different model Vauxhall. they wont even bat an eyelid. or even say to them that you have upgraded your discs from 236x20mm to 256x24mm

I think for now I will leave them standard size, maybe uprate them at a later date. IF i do need new discs I will buy them for £45 and keep it like that, they are quite powerful as it is and they are worn, not like the car is driven fast or reckless

Cheers for the responses though

Dan
