Bit of an oil debate at work. Guys car (Passat 2.0 8v) is excessively using oil. I asked him about the running in process as that can have long term effects on the car.

I mentioned that some cars are run in on a semi synthetic before switching to fully synthetic, I know Subaru do this. One of the guys claims that once you start using semi you cant switch to fully. I think this is rubbish.

People on vw forums have switched to fully after 50k and experienced smoother engines. My corsa was run on semi and i switched to fully when i bought it and had no problems.

What do people think?

i switched to fully synthetic. running 5-40 in my xe, oil seemed to run warm on friday 100 degrees normally 80-90 but it solved my tappety noise on start up
