On my brothers corsa the hydraulic pump required 00 gauge 21 solid core cable, we had to run that under the body of the car but it is heavily sheathed and needs a blowtorch on it to bend tidy

21 core cable will carry similar current to audio stuff its just a LOT cheaper and like you say a LOT harder to bend.
What battery did he have up front?
Im sure 1 run of 0awg would have been better with a battery or 2 in the boot.

I ran 0awg under the carpets without been noticable. Just run it around the edges. So its at the corner of the carpet. (the mats helped hide it)
