Author Cutting out on revs, please help

I started my car earlier and gave it a little rev, when the revs dropped they dropped to about 700 before climbing up to the idle 1000 or what not, i then reved it again and the revs dropped all the way and it cut out. What could be the problem?

at a guess the icv or the maf playing up
