well, its hard to compare them. depends on the model. obviously 20v turbo, but they come as 150bhp which are pritty slow standard and 180bhp which are slightly better. but if your gonna tune one get a 150 cos there cheeper to buy and are the same engine as 180 just different managment. performance aint great standard but have alot of potential. Bottem end of engine can safely handle 360bhp standard. But as all vag stuff its costly compared to vauxhalls, ford etc. possibly one of the most reliable engines even when tuned. handle ok, bit sort wid afew mile on but easy sorted by kw coilover kit! as far as specs go as in trim etc, the list is endless, theres loads of different specs.

Sorry to change The fonz's above comments, but the bottom end will handle 320bhp-340bhp, 360 as stated is pushing it way too far. Difference between 150bhp and 180bhp is a different turbo and management. 180bhp model has a K03s, same size but different internals. Expensive cars to fix when they go wrong, not as quick as you would think either. Good, solid cars other than that

Not quite true. My Golf is the 150bhp model but with the K03S turbo, dbw throttle and vvt. It is the same as the 180bhp except for the ecu, as Fonz stated.
There are quite a few variations of the engine with different potentials for each.
Broadly speaking though, just a tune of the ecu will give 200-210bhp with no other mods. The biggest gain is in torque though. On my engine with a Jabbasport ecu tune for example, the torque goes from 156 to 230 ish LB.Ft.
ZetecRob, have you thought about a Leon? Far more chuckable chassis. More bhp per pound too. Also 6 speed box from early on.

Diesel is the way to go. I'm on the look out for a mk4 gt tdi 150. With a Revo remap figures go from 150bhp/236lb torque to 190bhp/290lb torque.

ive heard wonders about the revo stuff for petrol and diesel engines. mate matt-the-hoople on here has a 204 or 208 chip on a 20v turbo seat ibiza and it really is fast, yet smooth at the same time

ooops, my mistake, the later 1.8T's did indeed use the K03s for the 150bhp, forgot about that. My apologies

AGU is good if you are going BIG turbo, as the ports are slightly larger. But that's getting into big money and an S3 or Cupra R would be better in the long run.
