hi, it hesitates during normal driving around at low revs and doesnt like picking up from low revs e.g - i cruise up to a roundabout in 2nd check its clear and try to pull up to speed and it lags loads before picking up! also i notice a slight pinking from the engine when NOT under load or idling along if u like, unusual because pinking normally occurs under full load at peak torque! very confusing.. any ideas

ICV or AFM at a guess, could also be a blockage in the injection system somewhere along too

Coolant temp sensor...sounds like you've got an 8v SPi so it if u reach round behind the inlet manifold, the side where the alternator is and you'll feel it sticking back towards the bulkhead. New one be about a tenner from a motorfactors, i'd put money on it causing your probs, since it did the same on mine once!

I know my 1.2 8v and my SRI 8v did this sort of thing once, thought by getting this 'newer model' itd be ok lol, soddin cars! these temp sensors seem a typical problem on 8v's ill try one 1st! just seems odd that there is no ecu light on.

well the light will only come on if it starts to give readings greatly outside its normal range, or stops working alltogether. Basically the resistor inside has given up the ghost after all the constant heat changing cycles so its givin off funky readings. will all of a sudden change causing the engine to behave very erratically like the problems your having.
Could very easily be covered with sludge too, when i took mine out it looked like it was covered in phlegm lol

Try checking the MAP sensor is plugged in correctly. MAP sensor is the Manifold Absoloute Pressure switch. Caused no-end of problems on my mate's 1.4 8v.
Should be a green plug about a inch along from the water header tank. Just take it out, blow it off and make sure it's seated properly. Just a guess mind.
Friend's corsa had no EML until it packed in completley.
