you need to apply to dvla to have your plate on retention or straight onto your new car if you already have it. They will then automatically issue a new Y reg plate!

Think you need a V317 form from DVLA and its cost 80 pounds for transfering.

Im in the same situation, Ive got a plate on my car but I want to sell both my car and the plate seperate.

If i put the plate on retention and paid £80 - I would then have to pay another £80 to transfer the reg to the buyer ?

is the best way around it to sell the plate and transfer it directly to the buyers car ? - But then how would I go about it ? Would both me and the buyer have to go to the dvla to transfer the plate? Or can I take the both mine and the buyers v5 in and do it for him ?

Its bloody complicated

i want to keep my plate and thought it would be 80 for a new plate and 80 to transfer my private so at least i know im up for a £160 stiff.

although if you sell the plate to someone im sure its their responsibility to pay for the transfer

no no

Its 80 to put plate onto retention or a new car

to treansfer a retention certificate to someone else if you seel the plate is 25£ to put it onto another car yourself is free (included in the £80)

The £80 also includes the replacement y plate!
