I recently went to a local garage to ask for a quote on colour coding the front and rear arches and the partation between my front/rear bumpers and boot/bonet. Now he said because it was a textured plastic the paint would just flake off after a few months? Is this true? isnt their a way to sand them down or somthing?

They just need rubbed down until the "orange peel" effect is gone . Once thats done , primer , paint , laquer .
You could attempt it yourself before you put it into the bodyshop

yeah sand paper (might be a certain type needed though that i dont know), you might as well try it, its not like you can spoil it, the texture needs to come off either way

the guy at your local garage obviously hasn't a clue.
you'd be better off finding another garage that can handle the task.
don't bother doing it yourself, takes ages.

Basically , if you dont already have the sand paper I reccomend buying a "Project Pack" from halfords , which gives you a couple of sheets of each grade of sandpaper you require for the job .
Rub the parts down , starting with the roughest grade untill you get to the stage where the orange peel effect has gone .
At this point the parts should be smooth , but not glass smooth , as your primer needs to have something to key to .

start with 80 grit and work to 400 or 600 ish
then it just needs plastic primer and it will be perfect. then just normal paint/lacquer

i work in a vauxhall body shop n am a panel beater but know about the pain side of things. we have done this plenty of times at work, basically we sand the orange peel effect down with 320 grit (takes time but does the job) any other grit rougher tends to tear in to the plastic. we then plastic primer then prine again with metal primer which creates a primer that sticks like super glue then paint either metalic or solid the results are fantastic and no jobs have ever come back. my mate had his done at my place and 2 years on its still mint.

and how much would you charge for full colour coding, if all the prep work was done by myself, just blue needed?
