The load on the belt changes as you rotate it, as there will be more tension created when the belt is having to open valves and less when they are closing. the best thing to do is run the engine for a few secs so you can see how tight it is while the engines actually running. the loosen tighten accordingley, if it's nearly tensioned correctly no harm will come to the engine (provided the timing is correct)

I just line them up, then let them move round a little so they are settled and then tension and crank it round and adjust it. got it down to about 15mins now

mine helped me change a timing belt on the old 1.2 8v engine

actually started that job at 9:30 in the morning..... car didnt start again till 5:30 that evening

em.... i used to take the coil to distributor lead off so no thiefs could get away... so the night before i took it off as normal.... went out the next morning took the engine apart, put it back together and it wouldnt start....

i was full sure i'd fooked it up cos i'd never done a cambelt before so was nervous.... the cambelt came off and went back on again about 10 times with the misus screaming at me that she was right and i was wrong .....

this went on all day till evetully i stood back and was about to give up and tow the car to vauxhaul.... then i spot no ht lead from the coil to distributor

stuck in on and she fired up first turn of the key

the misus still recons she could change a timing belt and water pump on a 1.2 8v with no help
