Is there any way of formatting a block of text that is in capital letters to 'little' letters??

under format on the tool bar- there should be an option thats titled change case- tere is on mine

Yes mate - highlight the text then click on teh Format menu, and click on Change Case. choose the case you want and click OK - jobs a good un.

copy it to word and do it in there then copy it back?

i think that may be a bit complicated - ive got like 6,000 rows to change

Fair enough, try this:
You should be able to select all the spreadsheet and go Edit > Copy then go into Word and do a Edit > Paste (not Paste Special) it'll import the spreadsheet into word and just select the whole thing again in word and Go Format > Change Case change it to what you want and Copy it again and paste it back into Excel.
Ive just tried it and it works. (save spreadsheet before you try it tho!! and check all your formulas have stayed in before you save it after changing the case!!)
