Timing wont cause it, as only contact that can induce is piston/valve....

Water pump does need timing it, there are marks, but they are very small. It shows it in the haynes. I think the main reason for the water pump alignment is for the cam belt length as its acentric.

Did you check the big end bearings?

They wont need tightening. Main bearings take much less load than the big ends.

Whats the oil pressure like?

Thought u said it was top end mannie. well that aint good. Shells are really inexpensive. Reground crack can be done for about £100 at an engineering place.

Did he drop the sump and a rod cap?

Regrind shouldn't cost more than about £50 I dont think, shells are about £30 for shite ones (avoid) or I spend £60 on race ones.

The hassle is dropping the crank to get it ground!

Well the engine is still under warrenty so i can get it reground and reshelled for free, its a pain though cos its got to come out the car now and go back to lincoln.
The bloke i bought it off is honest i know him quite well he had no idea that the big end had gone thought it was just huydraulic lifters, if he knew it was the crank he would have got it done himself.
The engine has only got 1500 miles on it so its just been run in.
Carnt be arsed to take the engine out and get it to lincoln and back so its getting towed to me local mechanic on sunday and returned tuesday night purring like a kitten
Very last time i swap engines, done it before and that didnt go smoothly either word of advice never ever buy an engine you aint heard running

even if you had heard it running you'd have bought it after being told it was the lifters wouldn't you?

Make sure they use decent bearings....cheap ones get chewed up pretty quickly at high rpm...
