As above really, complete waste of time or do they actually make your charge last longer?

Have to charge it up too much, doing my head in.

I haven't tried them myself, but to save battery life I turn off 'Auto brightness' and 'Wifi' when I can.

using 3g also eats up the battery, so if you can then turn that off when you're not using it.

Lasts a day at best if you've got push email on, same as every other smartphone.

I'm not especially careful with mine and the battery lasts for about 2.5 days. There is a noticeable difference if you have more than one push email account though, so I only have one account set to push and the others poll every 30 mins.

Mine lasts 2-3 days with 3g enabled, wifi only on when I need it (mostly off) and auto brightness off.

Surely wifi should use less when accessing the net since its only short(ish) range communication?

It uses more, probably due to changing birghtness alot and also being alot brighter at times than it needs to be

The internet says that auto brightness uses more power so it must be true. Just like multi-tasking uses more power, even though the iPhone doesn't actually do multi-tasking.

My battery is wank!

Probably take around 20 calls at a max of an hour a day on it, send ~50 texts, and send ~20 emails.

It barely lasts half a day.

Push email is on for a few accounts though, does it really chew up much battery?

A new battery will sort this out for your 3GS, Alex. Be brave, opening up an iPhone isn't that scary!

I've only bought a new screen off of Ebay before. It wasn't as good as the original, but did the job. Can't say if the batteries will be the same though.
