Dell Dimension 3000 - only a year old but it won't read disks... any ideas? Drivers perhaps?

you tried uninstalling the device then rebooting and letting windows pick it up again?

No, according to my computer the lastest driver is instaolled so perhapos ur idea is worth a try?

u put the cd/dvd in the drive, it makes some noise (normal noises) then nowt happens :S

Try reseating the cables also, open your case and Examine the ribbon cable leading to the drive from the motherboard or another drive. Unplug and reconnect it, making sure it is secure on each end. Be certain the plug inserted into the back of the CD from the power supply is securely seated

Its a piece of piss, just make sure everything is turned off and follow the above instructions.

to uninstall the device right click on my computer > properties > hardware > device manager > then right click on your CD/DVD drive and then select uninstall > then reboot your pc.

Does the motor spin up at all once a cd is in?. Place a cd in a try and give it a quick spin when closing and see if it picks up speed and starts. If it does not spin up then your drive motor is knackerd and it's new CD/DVD player time

That to me suggests the motor is spinning up.

take the case off unplug the cd drive plug it back in re-boot.

It's bust m8, I had this, most have two lasers, one set for CD and the other for DVD. Mine would burn DVD's but not CD's but the PC was under warrenty and I got a new drive.

I coul dmaybe understand this but for it to happen to both drives at the exact same time seems a bit funny
