some VIA chipsets have a problem with early alcatel USB modems, but thats about it!

but if you do go through an external USB hub, the problem goes away!

get an external USB hub (self-powered), only about £20 - £25! (USB-2 compatible)

its cos the USB modem is drawing too much power (literally sucking all the computer can give out via the USB), so when you ask that little bit more of the computer, it cuts off the power to the USB hub to help the system do the other job!

Having a million-watt PSU wont change things either, motherboard can only put out a MAX of 500ma per USB header, and the USB modem will draw about 450ma under idle, and peak 500ma+ on full load...

Only way then to get it back once it's shut down is to completely power the system off & reboot, but seriously, get a USB 4-port hub which has a mains supply to supply it with extra power & you'll be laughing!

Theres a good one!!!

if it is a USB modem, you might need a self powered hub. Ive heard some stories about them taking more power than the standard motherboard USB sockets can provide.

I keep losing power to my modem resulting in my connection being lost. Ive recently formatted the computer and reinstalled the modem.

I reformatted due to spyware stopping certain programs from running. Since the format these programs are still not working properlly. Mainly Norton and Paint.

Any ideas?
