Go for a wireless N router that has good reviews for range, get yourself some of those massive ebay wifi aerials for 10-20 quid to potentially make the range even better and test it.... If not you might have to try homeplugs or cat5.

I'd get the router in, see how far it goes then spend money if I had to after that.

You going to run CAT5 between the router and the extender?

Bit of a mission running cable for two storeys IMO if he's only charging a bit on top of the rent for free WiFi.

Thanks Sam! I will look into wifi extenders for the house instead of home plugs as I also need a CAT5 connection for my new home cinema amp that has airplay

quote: Some WiFi extenders (like the Netgear WN2000RPT which don't use a CAT5 cable to connect to the router) require a direct line of sight to your existing WiFi router so they are useless in this scenario. Most extenders need a CAT5 cable to the router though so if you're not prepared to feed the cables between each floor then again this option is not for you. Homeplugs as I say are the easiest options, you connect one to the router in the shop and additional ones (with WiFi antennas attached to them) in each flat. This scenario will definitely work if you have one consumer unit/fuse box that controls the shop and the flats. If you have different consumer units, it *might* work - there's no guarantees though and the only way you can find out is just by trying I'm afraid. [Edited on 10-11-2011 by Sam]

I would. Worry about problems later. Extender isn't a massive cost if it comes to it.

Shall I just risk it then haha

I can't see why it wouldn't work? Our standard router from the provider worked fine with full reception throughout our 3 story house.

With a home plug though.........can you install router in shop (connected to home plug) and then connect another router to the first floor flat (connected to home plug) and it will be on the same wifi network?

Ah right OK. | |

I can hide the router as close to the bottom of the first flat as possible as we have fake ceilings.

Highly unlikely you will get decent reception in the flats TBH.
