Point well made Paul, but I can't help but think we're over looking the one main factor that causes any annoyance in the first place - namely, why the hell have we got people posting such drivel anyway?! We shouldn't have to be clearing up threads and/or deleting stuff because people have posted such random crap.
because people browse this forum when bored and thats when the majority of posting / reading gets done... If we wern't bored - we wouldn't be sitting on a PC in the first place to read the stuff. i.e. stuck at work / college, lets go check the forum ... I've spent afternoon's where I'm stuck in a lesson and completely bored and just read every single post... In the same way, when some people are completely bored - they post crap posts! The thing is - if you limit people completely on what they say - i.e. say 'This is a car site, not a chat room - if your not talking about cars your post will be deleted' - people will simply stop posting, stop reading, get bored and the site will go v.quiet... (thus less people to reply to actual decent geniune problem posts) To get an idea of the problem, imagine setting up your own forum. Ok there it is, great - but no one's posting. So you tell some people to go post. They post - but no one's reading / replying... so they get bored and stop viewing. Basically - unless people are reading + replying people won't make new posts, and unless new posts are being made people won't bother reading... (it goes in a vicious cycle) - Hence by limiting what people can post overall - the site will get a lot more stale and will lose a lot of its 'activeness'. I know what you mean about the educating people - but sometimes when your bored too, coming on and just reading some slightly amusing drivel can get you through the day. Paul J
