Pre-service Elementary Teachers Views of the Nature of Science (NOS): An
Intervention Study
Abstract
This study examines changes in students' views of NOS as a result of a pre-service elementary
science methods course. The sample for this study consisted of students enrolled in a pre-service
elementary science methods course at a small mid-western liberal arts college. Students’ views of
NOS were assessed in the first class using the VNOS-C. The VNOS-C was also administered
near the end of the course. Following the second administration of the instrument, a portion of the
sample was interviewed to ensure the validity of term use and meaning and to provide additional
opportunities to investigate students’ views of NOS. Students were asked to identify which
features of the course caused them to change their views of NOS and to briefly explain how and
why these changes occurred. Changes in students’ views of NOS were identified and the role of
specific interventions in facilitating these changes was examined. Results showed that students'
views of NOS improved in those areas explicitly addressed in the course curriculum. Student
perceptions of the effectiveness of specific interventions were similar, however, VNOS-C and
interview results indicated that the interventions varied in their effectiveness.
