if the knock sensor wiring was wrong i.e an incompatible loom or ecu then the fault code for knock sensor will come on. to find out for definate the problem, unplug the knock sensor and see if the fault codes change.

what colour plugs are on the end of your loom?

are you getting any fault codes for the knock sensor?

Rob B

Yeah, apprantly so, but Burnout had exactly the same symptoms as me when he changed his engine for a later spec 1.4 but didnt change the ecu and found out the knock sensor wiring was different and that sorted it, so it seems like that may be my problem and the EGR valve coming up i think was just stored in the ECU as a problem previously from the previous car it was attached too.

rob, there is no difference in the egr wiring and thats the fault you are getting isnt it?

OK so my problem is most likely i have an ECU after 97 to incorperate a differnt knock sensor thats on it cause my engine is from 96, is there any simple way to fix this like just getting a new knoc sensor or would it involve changing all the loom for it etc... ?

changed in what way?

yes, knock sensor wiring changed after 1997.

Did the wiring loom or ECU's change at all in production of the x16xe's recent post revealed that someone doing a x14xe into x14xe conversion found the knock sensor wiring to be different when changeing the engine, mine also had the same symptoms of the EML coming on only when i boot it and then stayin on.

Im not currently using the ECU that came with the engine im using one from an engine i dont know the year of as the ecu was bought seperatly, basically i just want to know if anything changed as i know my engine is out of a late GSI ...
