Old engines used to have trouble with the rotor tips wearing off, and thats the very expensive bit. The engines are more efficient because unlike a piston engine, they dont use up energy converting linear motion (up and down) to rotation.

Thats why you get 1.4 engines that give much more power than conventional. Mazda are doin a uprated spec RX-8 soon, concept was revealed in Japan. So may have turbos soon Nismo...

rotar tips are £300 for a set and you need 2 x Sets so £600 aint alot really.

yeah, the tips aint bad, i think its prob more finding someone who knows what they're doin takin the engine to bits...

just read they've made one that runs one hydrogen, with an electrically boosted turbo. apparently has zero harmful emissions and keeps 95% of power.

Not nessesary , all dependeds on the life of the car , and if its had regular servises some go on till 90k , Tips and Rotor chambers are the usual and sometimes turbos , this is where most people scrap the Twin turbo for a bigger single turbo conversion for about 450Bhp.

the tips are the corners of the triangular rotors - they come into contact with the chamber and make the seal. They're basically like the piston rings in a normal engine, if they wear, your engine wont work properly if at all.

the new renesis engine (rx8 engine) is supposed to last for 150k before needing a rebuild, which is double that of the rx7 engine
