The latest performance model from Vauxhall, in the shape of the turbo powered Corsa OPC concept, has its world premiere this week.

The OPC Corsa is unveiled at the Essen Motor Show and gives clues as to how the Corsa might look if a GSi version went on sale in the UK.

It is under the bonnet where most of the interest lies with the new hot hatch. An all new 1.6 litre ECOTEC turbo engine, developing in this form 175 hp and maximum torque of 210 Nm, provides enough power for some serious performance from the OPC Corsa. The engine gives Corsa a top speed of 140mph, and a sprint time from 0–60mph of
7.0 seconds.

No performance Corsa would be complete without the right styling enhancements, and the Corsa OPC will not disappoint hot hatch fans with its front and rear spoilers, colour-keyed wheel arches and side sills, and striking 17-inch alloy wheels in classic OPC design.

The profile of the body looks stunning as it sits 25mm lower than on the comfort models.

This attention to sporting detail is carried through inside. Driver and front passenger travel comfortably and safely in sports ‘bucket’ seats finished in blue Alcantara upholstery, belted in with blue matching safety belts. The inside of the doors and selected sections of the instrument panel come with a mesh-style cover, and the instrument panel, adopted from the Corsa SRi, is finished in a matt chrome.

EXACTLY. OPEL. Not Vauxhall. That is the Opel Corsa OPC, not the Vauxhall Corsa GSi. The GSi differs quite a lot from the Opel spec model.

Hmmm... maybe the will have two GSI's??

Girlfriend works for vauxhall, she was talking to a collegue about getting a new car.

Anyways we had a chat and discovered that the new GSI will be a 1.8 Turbo with around 200 BHP.

Now not too sure if this is true cos you lot are talking about a 1.6 Turbo but like i said they could be two versions!?!

They are not gonna produce three different ECOTEC turbo lumps surely!!??

1.6 is being tested
1.8 ???
2.0 already seen in Astras

would be simply too time consuming and costly to produce these three engines all smoothed out with no teething troubles!!

its just not feasible

Things are really hotting up at Vauxhall. And although development of the next-generation Corsa is well underway, the firm thinks there's still plenty of life in the current model.

So, give a warm welcome to the Corsa GSi, seen in the current issue of Auto Express magazine completely undisguised during testing in Germany. The car is in full production specification, even down to the GSi badging clearly visible on the doors and tailgate.

Developed in Germany by Vauxhall's sister company Opel at its Performance Centre, the GSi is set to become a serious contender in the hard-fought hot hatch sector. The car is powered by an all-new turbocharged 1.6-litre ECOTEC engine, which insiders say will have a power output of 180bhp and an impressive 210Nm of torque.

Those figures should translate into a top speed of 140mph and a seven-second time for the 0-60mph dash. That performance puts the turbo Corsa in direct competition with the Renault Clio 172 and Peugeot 206 GTi 180.

Spy shots in the magazine show the GSi
features wheelarch extensions to cover not only its dramatically extended track, but also those chunky 17-inch alloy wheels. In fact, the finished car seems even wider than the concept we revealed last December in issue 733.

The front bumper has been redesigned since then, too, giving it a longer and deeper air intake, although the back bumper remains virtually identical in the production version.

Changes to the rear include twin side-by-side chromed exhaust tailpipes and a small lip spoiler at the top of the tailgate, while DTM-style door mirrors complete the makeover. Although no interior details are visible from these shots, it is believed that production cars will retain the concept's deep bucket seats and colour trim inserts.

The Corsa GSi will go on sale later in the year and is likely to follow the Astra GSi's competitive pricing strategy - so buyers can expect to pay somewhere in the region of £15,000. The hot hatch will form the entry point to Vauxhall's comprehensive range of performance models, which also includes the Zafira GSi and VX220 Turbo. Mike Duff

If the GSi goes ahead it'll be a 1.6 16v Turbo. Theres been no talk of turboing the 1.8 engine. Its too close to the 2.0litre.

Plus, whats the point in vauxhall having a 2.0litre turbo with 190bhp odd and a 1.6/1.8 turbo with 200bhp

IM fairly sure, if it does go ahead, it will be the 1.6 T engine.

I'd love one, deck it 40-50mm, new exhaust system, smooth that boot, then tune tune tune

they have the 2.0L in the astra, the 2.0L in the vectra which is a saab engine. they have new TDi's inthe corsa which are FIAT engines.

I take it the 1.6 turbo has a flat torque curve. probably a smallish turbo as well. maybe 0.5-0.6 bar of constant boost
