Maybe his engine was starting to feel slower and he had it rebuilt. The engine a very old design now! Not like VDubs where they get better when they reach 100k

There is no difference, and that engine would not remain in there. I do not care for the state of the engine, infact to be fair I do not care much for the state of the car.
