Hi,

I've got a few minor concerns about my new alloys which were delivered to me this morning. If you know what your talking about with Alloys and wheels then please help me answer these questions:

1) The wheels have minor scratches, nothing deep, but some of the scratches show black underneath. My dad is owrried that the wheels are steel painted silver and are not 'true alloys' - although all 4 wheels have the Irmscher logo and part numbers etc on them. Any ideas why there not silver all the way through?

2) Only one of the 4 wheels has a code number next to the tyre valve. All the other wheels have no code in this area. Why would this be? Is this normal?

3) the wheel that has the code next to the valbe is brand new - no scratches, no grease around the bolt holes or rust behind where it meets the car. This wheel we think has never been fitted to the car. It has however got a small dent in the side of it - very slight, but its there nonetheless.

My dad thinks that they may have put a tyre on it (there are marks to suggest this) and the tyre didn't seal correctly cos of the dent. Could this be true?

Please can people answer this thread Asap as if there dodgy then I have to stop the cheque used to pay for them as I won't accept them.

This is really important so if anyone can help please do. Mostly about the mark on the valve being on one wheel only and the dent in the edge of the alloy.

Thanks,

if its any help, i have standard vauxhall 3spokes on my sport, and a large scrape from the previous owner on one of the rears. Its has tarnished black underneath. It has most likely oxidised. A wheel refurbishment will sort it.

I am thinking of taking the alloy to Vauxhall in the morning and asking "will a tyre seal on that rim"?

Is that a good idea?

If anyone can help on theh lack of code number and the dent I'd really aprreciate it - its only a few mm off of circular for about 4 inches, but its a dent nonetheless so I need to know in case ive been swindled All four wheels cost as much as one sosft star new!

yes your best bet is to let vauxhall take a look. try and compare it to other Softstars for design differences etc...

Well the four have identical marks on the back - part numbers, the Irmscher logo etc - it's jsut only one has the KBA ... code on the front - don't knwo if ita new feature on newer wheels - as this is the obviously new one or what.

Anyone any ideas on the implications of this dent please say. I'd guess the rim has been dropped or something before it made it onto the car.

Thats good to know.

Im taking them to Vauxhall tomorrow morning to ask if a tyre will fit onto the dented one - if it doesn't then there going back to their original owner.

If it won't fit its obvious he tried to pull a swift one, if it does - then horay!

Two alloys need refurbishing though too. Does a tyre place do this or do i need a specialist place?

Where exactly is this dent.

YUoull need to go to a specialist place, theyll charge about £30 a wheel and will look like new afterwards

Remember to get some locking nuts, McGard ones are probably one of the best.

a wheel refurd place may be able to heat it up and bend it back?
also sometimes when vaux makes wheels it changes the way its coded or marked you may have two sets there.... ie some old some new
mine are vaux wheels and the markings are the same just in different places
and i rekon a tyre would seal onit

Thats good to hear - cheers lots guys. I just wanted to ask befor eI driving these round the county tomorrow!

I got the whole set for £165, I knew of the scratches (two are a bit scratched, one is brand new (the dented one, so i think it was dropped before it was fitted - this is the one with the code on it) and the fourth is ok.

I need two refurbed and one bent back!

Is it best to have them refurbed before they are fitted or even have tyres on them?

And... Are Irmshcer locking nuts any more special than McGard ones etc?

Thanks guys - more comments welcome

BTW I paid £165 for all 4, Vauxhall want over £575 for 4 new, So I got a pretty good deal (off of Ebay) so long as they fit!

ET49, 25% of price of 4 new basically. - Just for those who didn't see my other thread earlier in the week.

How long does refurbing them take? weeks? days?

I think I'll have to look if anywhere local will do it for me. I'll take it Vauxhall tomorrow anyway as I've got to book my service and MOT. I'll ask if the dent is terminal for the wheel while Im there.

Any advice on Irmscher locking nuts? where can I buy Mc Gard ones from and how much?

Thanks,

Irmscher locking nuts are £25 I think - they ok do you know?

Refurb frst it is then - so long as Vauxh say the dent is ok or the refurb people say it can be fixed. Otherwise its my money back and the start of saving for a new set from LMF.

My mates got Vauxhall locking nuts on his car, but i dont think much too them. Saying tat ive also got Vauxhall locking nuts on mine (Different type, similar to McGuard) which are ok, but first time i tightened one of the bolts after taking a wheel off, i put a big split in the "Key" piece . Wouldnt mind but im hardly a bulky bloke so it not like there was loads of force going onto it .
