the ratio thing means that 512k will be split between 50 people on your exchange, so if everyone is online it can turn out to be slower than 56k!

usually adsl providers will have a 50:1 contention ratio.
You'll have a adsl line, at any one time upto 50 users could be using that same line.

512kb/s shared between 50 users.

but in practice not many people will be sharing that line around ur area.
depends on the area tbh

The modem for £50 just plugs straight into ur USB port, makes life easier for some!!

If you got the knowhow, just use a standard PCI network card and fit and configure

don't get a usb modem,
get a PCI modem,
u can either get a PCI adsl modem , or PCI network card.

they will do the same job, just configure it up, (instructions should be availble on the ISP site)

you'll need a splitter (microfilter )for the adt box.

look around, u could pick up pci modems for 20£.

The problem with the ADT box is that it isnt a terminated cable that plugs into a socket, its hard wired into the master box ect, so it will have to be an ADT or BT job.
