Fuck me, shocking accident when looking back at the footage, noticed this morning that he's had to have both legs amputated 
I don't understand what the marshalls were doing, what happened to the flags?

Think it was all happening too quickly for flags.
Very sad news but when you look at the video he's done well to come through it, full pace in to a stationary car and those single seaters are not the most robust of things.
Horrible thing to happen to a young lad, safety being what it is these days these types of things are thankfully rarer but do prove how dangerous it can be.

the footage was pretty horrendous. It could have been so much worse.
Im not sure he would have seen the flags anyway with so much going on in front of him to focus on,
happens a lot in karting, guys at the front see the for example a false start flag and back out then get piled in to the back of from drivers behind,
