Just got my RAC renewal through. I usually use my Tesco Clubcard points to buy membership, but since they reduced the points ratio, I'm going to have to pay cash this year. The renewal came out at £220 for both of us, any car, home start, courtesy car, onward travel, blah, blah...

Had a look on the AA and it comes out at £150 ish for similar cover.

What does everyone else use or is it covered by your insurance via extras?

I get the missus Leon covered by booking a service with Seat - £150 for a service, and 'free' Seat breakdown cover (provided by RAC I think), which includes home start etc. Best deal I could find, and keeps stamps in the book for FSSH too.

Drive 24/7 - like £40 a year including everything.

They just buy in he services of all the other breakdown providers too, so you might get AA, RAC or Greenflag etc turn up if you break down.

Mega mega cheap on European cover too if you need it.

All online, so no call centre unless you actually breakdown in which case they have an emergency number.

Check out Quidco deals etc, breakdown services tend to be quite good with cashback and may alter your choice

I got Green Flag for a tenner a month which covers all my old shit and many trailers, probably be less for something that doesn't break every damn day.

I am going to look into them as currently pay £10 a month for RAC they put it up every year I call moan and get it even cheaper - 8 years been the same now and its all the uk services. I just need euro cover to

I use RAC, however its through my Bank - Barclays, but with that I get Home Start, Recovery from anywhere if not B&B for the night, and taken back home if needs be. Pretty decent.

I'm with GEM Assist, came out above RAC and AA and Greenflag in a recent poll and had great reviews. £68 or something like that covering me in all cars.

Who was your family cover with?

Need to sort the mrs out with some cover before I get the call "my tyre is flat or my car won't start". Interested to see the difference in cost.
I've got AA cover but that's done through work but covers me rather than a single car.

If you have a semi reliable car, or a car that doesn't make constant long journeys I recommend what I do.

I have no cover, and if I get to a point like I did around 2 years ago when I was stranded, I just called up explained situation and joined then and there for 12 months. Since then I haven't broken down and saved all the payments too

Joining 'then and there' for 12 months probably cost the equivalent of a few years normal cover after they've put the price up because you have no alternative.

I've found that not to be the case.


Even if it was a bit more, it would outweigh itself anyway.

I paid IIRC £135 when I was stuck from home with AA, that got me home too. Sorted.

So, in two years I've spent £135 breakdown wise. £5.62 a month, and that's decreasing for every month I'm not using it.

£135 will be an on the emergency joining cost.

Annual basic (which is the comparable cover to what you took) will be about £45 a year.

Even if that's true, and my figures are correct, even if join up every every 2 and half years for a year I'm still quids in.

£135 was a higher level cover aswell iirc
