Facelift mk6.5 fiesta Zetec S 1.6tdci, 50+mpg, £30 a year tax, cheap insurance. They come with nice leather interior and st clocks. A simple remap takes them to 125bhp/200lbft if torque and the mpg actually gets better lol.

As a VX service manager, IMO I wouldn't put ,y £6k into an early insignia. They just don't wear well and suffer some common issues. If however you do decide on one, they are lovely to drive, 160ps is a beauty and you'd see 55mpg realistically. Also, pm me any reg numbers and I can check reworks etc and any service history at VX dealers.

Cambelt rollers/tensioners are poor - You will hear a rubbing noise just after starting as they rub on the inside of timing cover.
EGR coolers leak and inlet manifold gaskets leak coolant also.
PAS hose is a weak point too.
Inside there nice and wear well however. Gearboxes are generally ok, as are flywheels.

do 400 miles a week commuting my mk5 golf 140 its maintained regardless has been really good reliability wise but im bored of VAG dervs now, gonna get a E46 330D

My Ibiza fr runs 175 hp and 341lb/ft so pretty nippy and it's only got a remap and pd160 intake
It's for sale too but has 70k miles, it's been fully maintained and is mechanically sound, it's also in rare kandy White and has the uber rare factory xenons)

Cheap tax and insurance and it's a cracking car, point to point it's very good, and when you're in a hurry it's a bloody good car I go to Scarborough and Whitby for work and I actually enjoy the drive 100/200 miles just gets swallowed up, cruise control Is a must as well love it on mine, plus the Ibiza comes very well specced with climate control as standard folding mirrors opening rear windows cruise control airbags all over the place, only reason I'm selling mine this next year is cos I need a bigger estate car for work and to pull a 17ft speedboat on occasions

Just got rid of a 118d m-sport (hindsight would be a gift), superb car but as mentioned, totally useless with a bit of snow or even light frost, had to abandon it a couple of times last year.

i have an insignia tourer, its an ecoflex 130bhp
it was a brilliant car up to 70k after that its gone down hill required a new engine at 74k spun a shell and piston mashed the head.
200 miles after a brand new lump was fitted the cam belt tensioner failed and the belt was thread bare very lucky it didn't snap otherwise it would have cost them another engine,
bill for the lump came to 5k then they also discovered it needed a flywheel and clutch
i wouldn't run one of these as my own car,
but it is very roomy and stereo /nav is pretty good

Tires are over rated as daft as it sounds I had complete slicks on my Ibiza last year and got absolute everywhere up every single hill and down the otherside never got stuck...
Then I fitted some brand new tires and got stuck everywhere, work that one out

I would say fabia VRS. I much preferred mine to any of the insignias I ever drove plus was unbelievably good on fuel. Also really good on back roads even as standard

Can't drive a 1 Series in light frost 
They are perfectly fine in all but the most severe of weather, same as any other car.

own one myself for just under 3 years , still got a bit oomph for "back road" sport if required, handling is still there regardless of derv lump,
can see about 200 bhp with dpf removal and remap etc

I got fed up doing 80 miles a day in an ibiza cupra tdi because of the ride comfort. Truth be told it was fucking horrendous.
Sold it and bought a clio dci 100, 05 or 55 plate, cant remember. By far the cheapest car ive ran and it was miles better for what i needed it for than the ibiza.

Corsa 1.3 CDTI is amazing on fuel and £30 a year road tax. Great little cars if you can find a decent one. A lot at the moment for sale have 150k on the clock and still going for decent money.
Comfort wise not the best on the motorway but mine would do 90 miles to £10 nursing the gas. Really easy to drive cars and great in car parks due to the size.
I'm currently looking for another one to use for work to cut motoring costs. After something with very low miles on the clock for around 2k.
Bigger cars are more comfortable but cost more to buy, more deprecation, bit more on fuel and so on.
Gold TDI GT might be a good buy.

Lad at work has just had an 07 plate Passat estate and I was genuinely surprised by how good it is. He paid £4.6k with 107k miles on it so a newer, lower mileage one should be in your budget. It drives well, returns good economy and most of all is bloody comfortable which is the single most important thing on longer commutes.
I do a 70-80mile round commute towards Manchester too and 50% of the commute, I'm sat in traffic so for me, comfort is the key-no point going for something too stiff or too lowly specced when you're sat in it for hours on end.
