Right, to mark my return to this forum is a question from a mate.

Bit of a history first, my mate bought a 1.2 8v Corsa (like my old one) as a new car for himself (to replace a Micra 1.0). He decided to race me at a local track and couldn't keep up, so he revved the car right to 5500rpm+ to get more power, as he thought. After a few laps worth of this he blew his engine apart.

So, he decided to do what I did and get a 1.6 GSi engine to replace it. I didn't go with him to get an engine, and he returned with a 1.5TD. (His reasoning being it's only 100cc's smaller and has a turbo, which will make it faster than the 1.6).

So, for the main question. How hard will it be to fit the 1.5TD into a standard 1.2 8v shell? I would need to know how to fit the unit first, plus an intercooler and all the associated pipework.

Also, for my own use, can you tune the 1.5TD in any way?

(And before anyone asks, the reason why he came argues a 1.5TD is better than a 1.6 GSi is because he is a complete clown!! )

He asked me much later on, how much more powerful is the 1.6. My answer is the difference between the bang you get from a party popper and the bang you get from throwing a match into the petrol tank.

On a more serious note, anyone actually know how to swap the engine into the shell?

tank and fuel lines are a must not sure if you will have to make your own mounts up and other than that you only really need heat and diesel for a diesel engine but ideally you need a donar car for everything and yes they are tuneable and one tune will beat your 1.6 easy

Hey!

If you have another Corsa (donor), you can transfer all parts complete in your car. If you have only the engine: that's a f****** fun. Hard to find all parts for this job.

Tuning? Maybe in Germany bei eds or another tunig company's in UK. I don't know, but I think it must be possible to put this engine from 67 HP to 80 - 90 HP?

Greeting,
Micha

Oh bollocks!! I won't tell him how to tune it (cause I'd bet my car on it that he'd wrap it round a tree that week!).

So how do you go about tuning the 1.5? And how long before it goes bang, if at all?

it will only go bang if you go stupid about it i have been told you can leave it ticking over and turn it up untill it ticks over to 2000 revs any more and he will go bang and it will shift. but imho i would hate to think my car ticks over that high they are quite a reliable engine and if you dont turn it up alot it will last forever might smoke a bit like

Turn up the boost and fuelling, big intercooler, will be rapid. There was a Spanish one putting out 300bhp iirc

300bhp!!!! Dear god! How did they manage that!?

I'm actually considering getting rid of the 1.6 and putting in the 1.5 TD! Do the above tuning methods make fuel consumption poor?

i had my td hitting 2bar on the boost guage was abit more pricey to run when you give it some but under normal driving its about the same but upping the boost and fueing makes it smoke and the police revoked the mot off mine

So by turning up the turbo & fuel & adding an intercooler, it'll be noticeably quicker?

I've heard about swapping the turbo from a Izuzu Trooper 3.1 into it? Any truth in this?

im not sure about that turbo but the one off the astra and cav 1.7 td is larger and the two of those use an intercooler as standard

and yes the power is noticeable soon as you put your foot down i had a straight through exhaust on mine it was a very strange sound could hear the turbo out of the exhaust whistling

I'm looking at a 1.7TD now. What did you do to it to get it up to 120bhp?

What is it like 0-60mph?

i'd say as quick as a 1.6 sport but alot more driveability with 45mpg,
mods were bigger intercooler, straight through exhaust, custom intake piping with tvr air filter ,turned up fuel and boost , 30row oil cooler next mod is bigger turbo
