I'm looking for a usb powered portable hard drive to store pics of the bairn on, as a backup and so we can transfer the pics to aunty / grandparents computers easily.
I *think* a 500gb will be more than enough, possibly a smaller one?
Anyway, i know prices have gone up with the bother in Japan etc, so trying to keep costs down. Two reasonably priced ones i've found...

The Toshiba one looks good, only 5400rpm, they do a 1Tb one for £80, but think thats ott for pics only? No rpm for the WD.
They also do a desktop external hd, that requires mains power, 1.5TB for £59.99?

Other options? We will be adding pics from iphone, htc, compact camera & my canon 400d so will be quite a few pics.

Will it store all of pics you have? 500gb is huge amount of space..
On my memory card I have 727 pics. 2,2GB used. Pics are around 2mb or so each.

Yeh i know its a massive space, i mean i have like 1400 pics on my phone, and thats only 5gb.
I was looking at the 500gb's as the 320's & 160's aint much cheaper? Also planning on getting a video camera, so the vids will be going on there too.

Haven't checked prices lately, so can't comment on them.
if you are getting a camera, you can easily connect it to a TV and not lose the quality?

Go for a 500gb, you'll soon find other uses for it. I got mine for uni work and stuff so I've got a backup but now it's half full of films so I can plug it into my Xbox and watch on the tv

i'd get the 1.5tb, can come in handy for other things should you wish to use it for something else in the future, thats a decent price too

How reliable are they? should i keep all the pics on a laptop aswell as the portable, or is it safe to remove them from the laptop?
Also, is it possible to add a second hdd to a laptop, or is it a case of replacing it? My laptop is old, but it does the job, but the hdd is canny small so constantly deleting stuff.

Portable hard drives are generally pretty reliable. Look into cloud storage though if you're worried, might cost a fair bit though

Small, compact, only 500gb though, but if your not wanting masses.

£40 was a good price, didnt see that, checking others now as mains powered ones seem cheaper than usb ones.

If its only pictures you want to store then have you considered getting a Pro flickr account? Unlimited uploads and it stores them online in the resolution you upload them. I upload all my keepers onto mine and they can be pulled back off to the PC any time  Only problem is they convert .tiff to .jpg but only a problem if you use .tiff formatting

CCL do a USB case for any HDD, mine cost me about a fiver (plus a HDD obv)

Dropbox is free for 2GB - I'd use that and setup a shared folder for the pics. Portable HDD's are notoriously unreliable, plus they're feckin' slow to transferring large files.

Or you could use InSync which is the same as Dropbox but loads cheaper

$5/year for 20GB. It's free to sync all of your Google Apps documents though, but that's not really what you need in this instance.

Cheap for 20GB. Personally would recommend Blaze if you need 'unlimited' storage, it's about £3 a month.

NEVER have your pictures in only one place! Whether that be an external or internal HDD. The drive will not warn you before it suddenly stops working. Getting data from a damaged drive can be an expensive affair, so be sure to have backup.
