Sounds like a material failure to me, for something like that to snap it is not right. Could be a bad batch.
Tbh whether they are cheap ones or expensive ones they should be fit for purpose.

would be easy to see if there's a fault in the metal, like lee says for it to bend then snap is pretty impossible with no other damage.
thats if we all talking about the same part, no even seen it yet.

hydrogen embrittlement, probably introduced at the plating/phosphating stages as it releases hydrogen gas. teeny little atoms diffuse into the interstitial spaces and cause the steel to become very brittle, shock load and it breaks.

I bought cheap ebay coilovers (130 delivered new!) for my astra coupe last October and drove it through the winter and went through some massive pot hole and they never broke or even leaked! So for something like this to snap they must be really really bad quality.

Yeah its just a freak failure. Thing is I actually agree with lee that the metal in these particular shocks can't have been upto whatever spec. What I don't agree with is that they are all like it just because they are a bit cheaper. They are tuv approved they will have been tested for stress tolerance and what happens under load. Tuv also means they have to be periodically retested to maintain the cert. I don't buy that its cheap materials, I do buy that there has been some defect in the manufacture of ojcs or a batch

Naturally if it comes with a 2 year warranty you don't expect them to literally snap in half so it's quite clearly a fault along the line. These things happen. As long as the company deals with it in a speedy and hassle free way it should be reet!

there are lots of 'what ifs'
There are industry standards and testing standards for reasons.....
Something is seriously wrong if two (dont forgot BOTH rears snapped) shafts of aprox 20mm diameter snap. Sendign the shafts to a metallurgist might be a good idea - out of interests sake anyway. Some pics of the fracture would be good too.... was it a clear 'snap' or more of a tear? You just wouldnt expect that shaft to simply snap through brittle fracture unless the steel had missed some of its treatments for example.... or been through lots of cyclic loadings
AP will use cheaper materials to build their cheaper 'KWs' but yes....as i stated earlier.... you still wouldnt expect this to happen.
