Situation is that i have a permit to park at a retail centre close to work. Then, three weeks ago, i went back to the car and found a ticket on it. It said that my car was "parked without displaying a valid ticket/permit" and fined me £40.

I checked the ticket, and found it had expired 31/12/02, so fair enough it had expired. I got a replacement permit the next day and sent off a letter with the new permit number hoping this would work.

Heard nothing at all until today, when i received a letter threatening court proceedings unless i pay them £100!!

Fact is i'd been using that permit for 3 months and had nothing, and no warning either.

Any ideas what i can do? Are there any loopholes to uncover, and are these 'court proceedings' threats bullshit or do they happen?

Any ideas appreciated

Just have to pay it, u could try sending them a cheque for the original £40 and date it from when they issued first ticket. I used to do this in Chorley worked every time altho i never left it as late as u.

cheers Tiger - didn't think of that one.

Didn't even have a warning tho, just seems really mean!

Broster - would that work? Has it been reied? I've heard it can work on speeding fines.

Are these threats of court action serious u reckon?

if they declined the initial appeal letter, then i wouldn't really mind sending £40

But it suddenly jumped to £100!! WTF??
Surely they should have written back to reject my application?

One that might work is if you had the ticket and stuck it on someone elses car, they may go and pay it without checking the number plate, i know this sounds far fetched but my mate got one a while back, was parked on some double yellows for 5 mins. he went to pay it, and cos there were a lot waiting he started reading the ticket, realised it wasnt for him, so threw it away. nearly paid it tho'.
Dont think this would work in your case, but its an idea for the future.

send them a copy of the parking ticket and say it was displayed on the dashboard, the parking man must not have seen it

although i think in mk a few people must have tried that one cos the parking men have all been given digital camera's

I would just pay the fine and cut your losses.
My brother got a parking fine for £35 because he had no ticket but he says he was getting some change for the ticketmachine.
Anyway, he began disputing it and they just kept declining it. The money kept going up and he kept on complaining.
Eventually when the final reminder came through saying the baylifs may come at anytime and take his car he then began parking his car round the corner just in case. So he eventually paid the grand sum of £180.
For the sake of £35 he paid 5 times that.
Basically you never win with parking fines.

just write a letter saying "it is the responsibility of the traffic warden to notice my hazard lights on with 2 litres of oil on the road!"

Always gets me off

Or you could use the harsh one (the only excuse to touch the heart of City of Westminster)

"I was 10 minutes late due to my niece getting lost in Soho, i was extremely distressed and in tears worried for her safety"

oh yeah one last one, i found this works the best

"I am an Asylum Seeker"

That one gets ya right off the hook, infact the even pay you for the inconvenience of slapping a ticket on your car!
