What do I need to do with my phone so I don't get a huge bill when I come back?

Switch data (data roaming / cellular data) off and use WiFi only.

don't turn it on or leave it at home are the wisest answers.

I'd say turning off data roaming or sticking it on offline mode were more sensible than not taking it.

ok and when he gets bombarded with texts and phone calls from mates/family i'm sure he'll be happy.

i don't see why you would need a mobile phone abroad anyway?

they have plenty of pay phones around and it's just anyother item that could get lost/stolen/damaged.

Phone calls will cost, don't think texts do.

If it's set to offline mode it'll function perfectly as an MP3 player with no hassle from family or internet costs.
