I was looking at one of my competitor's websites just now (one of my businesses is computer maintenance).

They charge £80 to go to your home and set up your games console for you.

Seriously, WTF?

quote:

Console Setup
With many different consoles requiring all manner of cables and connectors getting your console set up and working on your TV can be an unwelcome challenge. We're here to help.

What we can do
- Unpack your new console
- Connect and configure your console to your TV
- Enable parental controls and enable online gaming
- Setup media streaming between devices

What we can't do
- Take away any packaging

I would understand if you needed help in say setting up some complex home entertainment system which had loads of DSPs, amps, cabling etc. but a fucking games console?

It's like Sky insisting on coming over to 'install' my box when I'm plugging it into a communal system. No thanks.

tbh you get rich people who would phone up and get you to put in a PS3 or Xbox for their children as a surprise.

He's not the idiot for offering it anyway, quite the opposite. If someone's willing to give him £80 for the pleasure that's their bad judgement.

My father-in-law charges people £50 for a reformat They queue up for it though, idiots, throws them my way sometimes!

Someone was getting confused because their taskbar had gone to the right instead of at the bottom and he convinced them they needed a new AV product and then a reformat, £80 They agreed but he didnt have the heart to go through with it

So yea, offer the service and let the fools that think its a good deal line your pockets

We used to get grandparents calling up at Gamestation asking which wires went where and what they needed to do. Definately a (limited) market for it!

See I'd be a bit gutted if a family member bought me a new games console for my birthday or whatever and they (or they paid someone to) set it all up already; part of the experience for me anyway is actually unpacking it all, smelling the new electronics/plastic type smells and setting it all up!

There's demand for it, same as there's demand for anything which people don't want to do.

I would never book my car in to a garage for an oil change and I certainly wouldn't go to a computer shop for a reformat, but I know loads of people who do both.

I'm sure there is a demand for it, but surely it can't be such a high demand as to actually warrant offering it as a service? I mean, games consoles come with written instructions on how to set them up. Even a thick chav could set up a console for example?
