I was on the M40 driving back home on saturday afternoon and was near J7, doing about 90, I noticed a few hundred yards ahead of me was a police car on the hard shoulder (Vauxhall Omega), so I slowed down to the same speed as everyone else at the time (80), and as I drove past the cop car I noticed he had a speed (I assume) gun pointing towards me, he was sat in his car with the door slightly open.

If they do me for speeding, is it just a normal NIP in the post and 3 points/£60 fine or are they going to drag my ass to court for this?

BTW when I say the speed gun was pointing towards me, I mean pointing to cars coming from my direction, not pointing at me and no-one else!

I would have thought they normally do people for going over 90 on a motorway?

10% + 2 mph are the guidelines that most use, however they can still book ya for doin 71 if they really want to.

Knowing Thames Valley Police I will get done for being 1mph over their 'guidelines'

"I'm sorry I didn't know what speed I was doing, my speedo cable snapped so my speedo just tells me that I am only always doing 10mph"

wrong. car makes are allowed a 10% error in their speedos above and below by law so if your 10% and below then they can't do you

Are you sure? It would have taken them ages to drive off and chase the offender though wouldn't it, as he had his door slightly open with the gun pointing towards the cars (though the speed gun wasn't on a tripod or anything)?

Well this Omega was just before J7 and I got off at J8 (Oxford turnoff), I didn't see any cars marked or unmarked parked up on the hard shoulder.
