Anyone used it before? Just got our new hole in wall fire and requires the chimney being plastered with heat proof plaster!

Where sells it?!

Tried the obvious Wickes / Screwfix / Toolstation / B&Q other than local builders merchants doesn't even seem to be alot of sellers online.

You're searching for the wrong thing. Try Fire Cement.

fire cement is sealant for joints in chimneys and flues, its not something you would slap on a wall

Jules, you may know the answer to this; what is the normal temperature limit of standard plaster/plasterboard?

My stove is fitted in accordance with building regs; 150mm from all combustible surfaces from the side panels and 300mm from the door; the mantel sits 300mm above the stove top surface and the stove has a hearth temperature of <100c so I only require a 12mm Hearth (Although I have about 2ft in reality as its built onto a brick sublayer set into the fireplace down to the sub floor).

I can't find a regulation referring to the plaster requirement for the reveal of the fireplace though the planning portal

Plaster is non combustable, I think the bigger issue will be of it cracking/falling off

It really depends on what sort of plaster it is....

http://www.british-gypsum.com/literature/data_sheets.aspx

That might give you some idea....49deg C seems to be the limit

hmmm, I know I have a sub 100 degree hearth temp. but god knows what the radiant heat off the back/sides is. In fairness the stove itself is going to sit outside of the reveal so it will just be radiant heat from the back which will be the flue diameter off the back wall so ca. 250mm.

I guess it would be sensible to use the same stuff as Daniel_Corsa is asking about?

Yep.

I don't know much about fires tbh, but I read that an 'open' fire generates around 1000 degrees c around the hearth back/sides

Cheers Jules, I'll have to grab myself a tub of that, bit worrying it requires high temp plaster and I'm hanging my TV above it! Ah well new TV in 6months!

Nay worries,

If your mucking around with relatively tricky/risky stuff like this as a DIY'er I'd advise you ring the supplier up, bullshit you are an Architect and ask for an NBS specification for the application.

It wont help your TV though, that will completely depend on the hearth size/height etc like Rich said above

Fire is set in to the wall "hole in wall" style, the glass front is set back around 4" to push the heat forward and away from the wall!

TV will be about 12" above the fire maybe slightly more but if it becomes damaged due to heat will have to upgrade, try claim under warranty!

Just working out how much plaster will need think be 20kg rather than 10kg to do the full chimney front!

Yeah building a 19mm false wall off the chimney to run all cables behind for TV etc. Then boarding and skimming.

Only place seems to the one Jules suggested, will have to see if TP or other builders merchants stock it.

B&Q sells 'fire board'.

Its the 'pink' one. I used that for sheeting the walls round our stove thingy. Then just taped, filled and painted. Sorted

but saying that....

Teh fireboard just delays fire spreading (its more resistant to fire than norm board) so it may not be what you want....

register plate has lip on all 4 sides.

Back fastenf into red brick, front into granite lentil and sides into wood.

Used large hammer-in masonary fixings (through reg plate)

Put they can be unscrewed if needed (hopefully )

yes, but with fire cement.

A fire proof sealant / sikaflex would do too.

We also got the reg plate made up with an access hatch, and flange to help seal the pipe/plate too.

I should have pics somewhere - I'll have a look. We got the plate made to our requirements by a local blacksmith. Much cheaper than any specialist places

the front is the one without a lip. Just remembered it fixed to the underside of the lentil, so no need for lip
