Am currently building a Media centre and im having a problem, i have connected everything up but when switch the power button on nothing happens, the ATX are both connected, the power switch is also connected

Recheck all jumpers etc.I would reseat everything too When i had this once though was a faulty PSU.
oh and plug it in

You can 'jump start' ATX boards by connecting the two pins from the on off button with a screwdriver. This lets you know if you have a faulty button or not. Can't say I'm too keen on that idea though, the techs at an old job used to do it all the time though.

No joy with the jump start, i have so far tried
removing the motherboard and all connection completlely and reinserting
Re-Inserting memory
There is no sign off any power getting to the PC, nothing happens at all when the power button is pressed or the mains connected?
Possibly a dogy PSU, unfortunately i havent got another one to try
If the PSU was too low for the mobo you would still get a slight sign of start up wouldnt you?

if the PSU was a too low wattage you would still get power.
sounds like the PSU s fucked of the fuse n the lead has gone.

Aye, when switched on at the wall and on on the PSU you should at least get some lights on the mobo, or even if you listen really carefully you might even be able to hear it getting power if no lights are on the boards, but I would agree the PSU or accessories are fooked

no lights or noise coming from MB, so i guess its the PSU or lead, bloody brand new as well
I will try this when i get into night.
Is there any other way to try and power the machine on without using the power button? have tried connecting the reset button to power to check the switch with no joy

Even if your RAM was dead it would still power up (and beep or flash keyboard LEDs at you) so rule that out.
Normally one of these:
- lead between motherboard and power switch isn't connected correctly
- PSU is dead
- kettle lead has a duff fuse

Forgot to say - if you check the kettle lead and it's OK, and the lead on the motherboard is OK, if you have a multimeter you can check the voltage coming from the PSU:

Put your ear to it and power it up and see if you get any buzzing noise etc, most of the faulty PSUs i have come accross make a low buzzing or other fucked noise

to check that the fuse is ok plug the lead in turn the switch to on and put your tounge on the end that plugs into the psu.
if you dont reply ever again we will of established that the lead was ok..

Couple of stupid questions
When the power lead is connected to the PSU, should the PSU fan spin?
I have to connectors from my PSU ATX 20+4 and a 4 pin connector, i have connector both of these to the MB, are they both needed, when i was looking around for another PSU i noticed some only had the 20+4 connector?
As this was the first PC i was building from stratch, is there anything i could have done in the setup which would of fucked the PSU or MB? I didnt where an anti static wristband, what damage would this cause to the MB? surely it would still power up?

none most likley,
is there a switch on the psu? or a switch from 240v / 110v ?
check the lead make sure that works first.
the psu fan will only come on when you turn the pc on.
can you open your case and take a pic? see if there is anything we can spot.

How many psu connections do you have to the mobo?.
The 24 pin and 4 pin connected?.
(Some need an 8pin connection instead of the 4)

24 pin and an 8 pin connecter which the 4 pin connect into (each pin case is a different shape)

Did u put plastic washers in when you screwed the mobo to the case? I had that before, and it was shorting out and wouldn't do anything.

its not the power lead just tried, so it must be the PSU, but i need to now find a donor from somewhere

Go buy a multimeter and test your PSU instead of just randomly buying/borrowing a new PSU, it's only a fiver from Maplin and you can use it to test all sorts of shit!

The Mobo is raised from the case with what look like gold coloured screws

Read the manual and see if the motherboard supports running off 4 pin atx. Personally i'd get a 4pin to 8pin atx cable or something like >this<, if you've got a maplins near, which should the trick (ie: molex to 8 pin)
