Righto...

Our garage should be getting built (started anyway) soon and I'm wanting to look into flooring for it.

I dont want just a painted grey cement floor. We want black and white checked. Garage floor space is aprox 7m x 6m.

Options would be PVC (or other plastic) tile, ceramic tile or vinyl/Lyno

Plastic tiles - seen ones at 500x500m for £5 a tile - so we'd need 168 tiles roughly - about £900

Ceramic - aprox £10 psqm so say £450

but will take a while to lay and 'may' be a bit fragile with tools being dropped. May be slippy too.

Vinyl - In my opinion a non starter.

Any ideas, prices etc?

i'd imagine garages floors like that aren't used for fixing cars as they are so fragile.

could you not get someone to paint the floor like that? would be much more durable.

yes, that sort of idea, but not wanting to spend that sort of money on it. Most of the google top searches are aprox £30 psqm, or £1500 minimum as they will only sell if they 'design and install' - wank!

tried google and ebay. The £5 a tile are ebay ones.

Just interested in othet folks thoughts and insight. I think ceramic tiles would be ok... but not 100% sure

I wouldn't go with ceramic, say you drop something really heavy, it's possible. It would crack a fair few, the weight of an engine on a crane would probably crack them. I'd go with rubber interlocking jobbies.

Have you considered just painting the concrete with the black and white squares.

advantages are its more hard wearing and considerably cheaper.

i'm sure a professional company would do it for less than the cost of ceramic tiles.

or just get a few huge spirit levels and mark it all up.

do you know how spirit levels work?

Doubt the be much use for making sure things are straight on a side plane like that. They'd soon tell me if the floor was level, but to my knowledge, not much else.

I'd just paint the floor white or something. Then when you drop bolts they won't be so hard to find!!

ok then get a ruler and pencil and do it that way

it's not hard, would just take a day or so to mark it all out and double check.

rather do that then spend silly money on tiles.

Whatever do you - remember the purpose is to work in there.

Those chequer pattern interlocking things look good but I would be scared to open a bottle of oil in there.

Painted can be mopped out, won't scratch or crack, easy to install, easy to re-install if you want to freshen it up.

true.... not sure if much grubby work will happen in there.

Initial plans will be to keep 911 and RR in there, and the two track cars in the barn.

Remember the good thing about tiles is that when they do get damaged they can be replaced in isolated areas.

I'd just pay out for the plastic ones you were looking at as how often do you replace a garrage floor?
