If you're planning to buy any hardware (need to buy it at the same time, could also be a cheap arse mouse etc) then you can get OEM copies that are a bit cheaper. Could also buy student copies as i don't think they check, Pow knows a link to a place that does cheap student software.
If possible get the Ultimate version but otherwise whatever's in your budget.

Alternatively "purchase" it from your friendly online dodgy store. Deactivate the authentication, known as WAT and Bob's your uncle and Fanny's your aunt.....

Jambo just go into PC World and buy a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium.

OEM with mice or whatever is pointless and illegal (OEM license lives and dies on whatever COMPUTER it is pre-installed on) you might as well just download a pirate copy if you think buying an OEM off eBay or whatever makes it "legal"

P.S. I wasn't being arsey or anything BTW, just something I found out/had drummed into me when I was enquiring about OEM Windows/Office licenses for one of my customers.

With OEM licenses even if say your PC blew up you can't install that license key onto your new computer legally - how shit is that!

You would never ever ever have a problem because you had an OEM licence.

I was talking more in terms of the legality of the license rather than it passing WGA at Microsoft.

Even if it's illegal according to the t&c's, you'd still never get caught/done for it, there's a massive amount of rule bending going on everywhere with MS licences.

Whats the reason you're wanting Windows 7?

I've tried it twice now and always reverted back to XP.

XP is terrible compared to 7 after you've used 7 for 5 minutes.

Vista may have been slow and buggy but even using it for 5mins I would never go back to XP. Vista is aestheticly pleasing better layed out and more intuitive, just a shame its as reliable as Nathys threesome chances.

Seven is widely regarded as an excellent OS. Im not a computer programmer I just want it to store images edit them store itunes my snes emulater and some porn. It will do just fine

Just get the one of PC World. OEM licences are illegal unless purchased with a complete system at time of building OR if shipped with a system from Dell etc.

Don't download one, there in lays a lot of trouble!

Windows 7 is the way forward, anyone who doesn't think so (IMO) is just "following the Vista crowd".

There's a comparison of features in the Microsoft website. Software 4 students only offers UPGRADE versions, as do the first few results on google. Weird!?

4GB ram will be fine!

Nope, 4GB is fine for you. For that reason I'd install the 64-bit version on your computer.

Ultimate has language packs, XP Mode, join to domain, nothing you really need to worry about
