When the first one snapped it was tightend right up and it had been on the car since before I bought it,the car had been lying in a neighbours garden for years so maybe the alternator does infact need replaced??

As said, belt is either too tight, or maybe a knackered pulley/tensioner of some sort?

Get a hold of a torque wrench and tighten it to the specific values?

Nah the one on mine u have to tighten up 2 bolts 1 to tighten the belt and the other to hold it in that position, but if I don't tighten it right up then a can't put the second bolt in as it won't be in line with the srew thread

It could be too tight, or if either a pulpy or tensioner is fucked it could be slipping and that will heat it up making it more likely to snap

Its too tight. There should be a small amount of tension on the "V" belts, the "U" belts should be tight.

Over tightening a "V" belt will do more harm than under tighten!
