ok so, today i took a few things off round the cambelt to see what was involved to change my thermostat.
also took out the spark plugs to check them.
i never alterd the position of the cambelt or anything.
now, when the revs build up, it gets to about 5k then splutters a bit and cuts out. I dont think i have nocked any sensors off or anything,
its a 1999 1.6 8v mk4 astra.
cheers,
Rob.

not much help but would you go around where you was working again checking everything, and you didnt damage the plugs when you had them out did you?

ive looked around all the things that i touched when i was working on it earlier, ive also checked the plugs again just now and there all fine, took it out for another drive and its not got any power really and the revs get to 5k and it splutters like it just suddenly hits a limiter and then cuts out.
its really annoying me now as i cant figure out whats causing it

Is it misfiring?
Is it ticking over correctly?
Is the engine management light on?
Is the air filter positioned correctly and not congested?
Has the oil been changed recently?
Is the engine tapping?
Don't assume its something you've touched, it could just be coincidence.....

it does mis a bit but it allways has, when i hold a steady throttle at about 3k it is up and down, seems to rev a bit then drop a bit then rev a bit then drop a bit, then if you build the revs up more it gets to about 5k then cuts out and sometimes the managment light just flashes on and off untill you turn it off and on, i have tried the paperclip test but it just comes up with an old code thats been there for ages P0841 or something wich is a high speed cooling fan circuit malfunction or something.
ive got the battery disconnected at the moment, i have checked the air filter, it is in properly and there is no blockages.
when you first fire the engine up its a bit rough, kind of like its firing on 3 cylinders but not quite that bad.
the oil was a bit low but i added another litre of new oil about 2 weeks ago, i was planning to do a oil and filter change soon though.
the engine is not tapping no.
im cunfused as to what is causing it, its bloody annoying!

Sounds like a MAS fault, or AGR valve problem but it should throw up a fault code....
It could be a coilpack breakdown, which could restrict ignition maybe on 1 cylinder. If the car was misfiring, you'd notice a serious lack of power, the car probably wouldnt be able to go past about 80mph....

It could be a hot engine you can smell, is the thermostat ok? That could also explain a loss of power....

the thermostat could be on its way out, i have actually got a new one ready to fit, the temp needle on the dash is always below 80 like on the coldest it can be, the heaters still blow hot air out. the car has been standing for a while so ill check it in a bit when its cold and see if its any different. i just checked the cat and its fine.. stripped it on the road in the wet on my back

sure your plugs are ok? my 8v astra used to splutter untill i changed te plugs. there are no sensors on these engines to go wrong really so i would start from the easies/cheapest place first and try new plugs, especially if the car has been standing for a period of time, if its the single point engine there are now air flow meters on the engine so wont be that

well, its the 1999 8v ecotec engine.
its a strange feeling, it seems like the engine is being starved of something, it just revs slowly to a certain point then stops dead like its on a limiter. how long would it take for the ecu to reset if i remove the battery?
there is no lights on or error codes to state there is any faults, i dont get it

try cleaning eiter the TPS or ICV or check for vaccum leaks as that can affect running of te engine
