Over the snowy weekend I have seen loads of BMWs (RWD) struggling to get any grip on the snowy/icy roads.
Our cars are FWD and as long as I accelerate very slowly from standstill I can successfully drive off.
Are FWD cars the best cars for this sort of weather, or are drivers just shit due to giving their cars too much gas and end up spinning/driving into stationary objects?
P.S. I've never owned a RWD or 4WD vehicle before only FWD so hence my questions above.

My BMW 325 hasn't been a problem, if anything, better in the snow

Then is it just a case of:

Indeed. In extreme cases im pulling away in 2nd gear. No real hassle tbh.

I've had an absolute ballache trying to get the VXR up the little hill to my garages and ended up reversing up the hill to them, because for some reason I didn't get stuck that way?!
However, the same small hill last year I had no problem at all in my Impreza, I could even do hill starts in it on steep hills.
IMO much better to have 4WD/ AWD

Definatly alot easier with 4WD/AWD. But failing that I do think RWD is easier than FWD. Its alot easier to push something than it is to pull it.

I think this is why I succeeded by reversing up the hill & mimicking RWD?

Would make sense really. Although I wouldn't like to try it myself

We seemed to do OK in the A8 at the weekend which is a Quattro, though if you floor it all the power gets sent to the back giving you oversteer fun time out from junctions.

I've had the navara all weekend and I've taken it out of 4H and left it in rear all weekend as it's been more fun

Just now ive got m3, jades mini & auld mans audi a4 avant up here & the m3's got the best traction in the snow. Just need to remember to stay focused though or the back end will try to overtake the front!!

as said before, 4wd is best for winter.
i tried 3 different slopes and failed each time in my leon cupra r.
this is mainly down to my eagle f1's being the worst choice for ice.
after the TC cut all power, i had to let gravity take me back down. luckily there was no one behind or i'd have slowly smacked into them.

Should have turned TC off in the ice.

Ive had no real issues, other than a super frozen windscreen. Credit to the car though, I get so much feedback I could probably tell what angle the snow fell at.

To be honest...
My cars got wide tyres, so the pressure on the surface over the area is quite low, compared to say some thin tyres...
It's also got a LSD ... (as prob some bmw's would have) which means as 1 wheel spins up, the other wheel will spin up = both wheels spinning up... so suddenly there's no traction at all (so the car may just slide backwards for instance).
and finally I've got my suspension still set on ultra stiff settings I use on track, so the rear wheels just spin up if you give it slight throttle.
I had to get pushed out a slight incline the other day, because i just sat there spinning the wheels whatever I did.
Last night I came home from work, couldn't drive up into my drive at my flats. called my mate to give me a push - he didn't believe me, so jumped in the car and had a go and instantly agreed it was fucking hard to drive in my car on the ice.
Where as his g/f's fwd micra easily trundled up.

Had no gripes with the golf on 8" wide wheels, just use the clutch and gears for going up inclines and to help with slowing down.

The omega is fine in the snow....and a lil bit more fun
The grand vitara i had last time it snowed i just put it in 4WD and it was fine just drove it normally. Only problem i had was a steep hill, put in 4WD Low ratio and got up it fine

Ive been using 3rd gear to pull off in extreme cases and its been ok (bmw)
If you just plant it, it will stay on the spot nearly.
Good times last night tbh
